2026 OCTOBER

Event Report – “Lead to the Change” with Former Finnish PM Sanna Marin

Sanna Marin Discusses Leadership Resilience and the Power of Action in Tokyo

On 16 October 2026, FCCJ members joined former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin at the Japan Publishing Club in Tokyo for “Lead to the Change,” an evening exploring how individuals and organisations can help shape society’s future. Marking the Japanese publication of her book, “Action is Hope! Leading a Nation at 34,” the event was organised by Home-sha, co-organised by Tokai University, and supported by J-Win and FCCJ.

Moderated by Yuriko Shibayama of Tokai University, the programme combined a discussion of Marin’s book with a panel discussion and questions from the audience. Drawing on her experience of leading Finland through the COVID-19 pandemic and the security upheaval following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Marin reflected on decision-making under pressure, gender equality and the responsibility of leaders to make space for different voices.

At the heart of her remarks was the idea that hope is created through action. Marin described encountering people, particularly young people, who question whether their voices can make a difference amid climate change, war and geopolitical uncertainty. Her response was that individuals have more influence than they may realise. Institutions and achievements that people depend on today, from the Nordic welfare model to international cooperation, were built by previous generations facing difficult circumstances.

Finland’s decision to apply for NATO membership provided a concrete example of inclusive leadership. Marin explained the importance of involving the President, government, parliament and political parties, while coordinating closely with Sweden. Building a durable decision meant ensuring that participants had the information they needed, could raise concerns and felt respected throughout the process. Her lesson was that recognising a possible outcome is only one part of leadership; bringing people together behind it requires sustained work.

Questions from the audience connected these experiences to organisational life in Japan. Discussing how to encourage employee autonomy within established workplace cultures, Marin acknowledged the difficulty of changing deeply rooted expectations. She emphasised creating an environment where people from different generations can disagree constructively. The ability to discuss competing views without damaging relationships, she suggested, matters both within organisations and in democratic society.

Gender representation was another major theme. Marin challenged the assumption that age or gender determines leadership capability and reflected on working with the talented women who led the parties in her coalition. In the discussion of media representation, she argued that qualified women can remain overlooked when organisations repeatedly turn to familiar networks. Deliberate changes to policies and practices are needed to broaden participation and make expertise more visible.

The conversation also explored Finland’s approach to resilience. Marin highlighted the value of public services that support families, access to nature, a sense of responsibility towards the community and preparedness for difficult circumstances. She described realism and preparation as foundations for working towards a better future. Similarities between Finland and Japan, including punctuality and consideration for others, offered further points of connection with the audience.

The evening offered FCCJ members an opportunity to consider how lessons from public leadership apply to business and everyday professional life. Across the discussion, Marin returned to the importance of participation: listening carefully, challenging established assumptions and taking responsibility for change. We thank Sanna Marin, the organisers and fellow supporting organisations for an engaging exchange on leadership and society.
