LUNCHEON MEETING 25 APRIL, 2002
Theme:
"EBC, how to sharpen the tool"

Guest Speaker:
Mr. Richard Collasse,
Chairman of the European Business Community (EBC), President, Chanel K.K.
RECAP
Richard Collasse started his presentation by giving some general views on the Japanese market, and why it is still rather difficult to enter, and why EBC has an important role in making market acees easier for European companies.
As an example of the small influence of foreign companies he mentioned that the ratio of foreign investment to domestic investment in Japan is only 1 %. The OECD average is 17 %.

Mr. Collasse also metioned the changes to be made to the organization and constitution of EBC, and that a further challenge will be new countires entering the EBC.

The EU Japan Business Round Table (EUJBDRT) is an important forum for EBC were it is recognized as as an important party; the EBC Chairmna co-chairs the most important sub-committee, the one on Trade & Investments.

To build a good platform for his future work, Mr. Collasse will visit all 13 ambassadors of the EBC member countries, will hold presentations at all 13 Chambers and visit all important players in the Japanese administration, METI, MOF, MoFA, JETRO, Keidanren, etc.

EBC also seeks deeper cooperation with the American Chamber, on issues were cooperation serve the European interests.

Unfortunately lack of time (and his enthusiasm about EBC...) prevented him to go into his other subject, Chanel in Japan. But we shall wait for that until he is our guest speaker again, then we also might hear something from his book to be published in the autumn. At least the title indicates that it is going to be an interesting one, "The Japanese Woman"....

The meeting was attended by 28 members and guests.
