MONTHLY LUNCHEON MEETING 17 JUNE 2003
Theme:
"T-Engine Will Achieve a Ubiquitous Society"

Guest Speaker:
Ryu Koriyama, Chairman & CEO, Aplix Corporation
RECAP
Mr. Koriyama started his presentation by explaining about the T-Engine, which is a hardware "extension" to the Tron software/operating system, which is extensively used in embedded applications. The T-Engine Project offers an open platform for embedded system development with a real-time operating system, with programming tools, development boards and standard hardware in a secure architecture.

To give an idea of the range and amount of embedded applications - out of the 5.3 billion microprocessors produced per year, only 130 million are used in PCs. The rest are embedded in electronic equipment around us, from mobile phones to toasters, from cars to air conditioners.

The T-Engine Forum, established in June 2002, is in charge of carrying out the development of the T-Engine Project. The Forum has today 120 members, including a number of international companies, also Finnish.

Altough fairly technical, Mr. Koriyama's presentation was much appreciated and raised many questions from the IT experts in the audience.

What is Ubiquitous Computing?
It is an approach to human-computer interaction. Ubiquitous Computing is about distributing computation in the environment, as opposed to keeping it bottled in a desktop-bound personal computer. It could also be described as the third "wave" of computing after the mainframe and the PC, or the ability to use computers anywhere at any time.
