Wednesday, 14 November 2012 - FCCJ Luncheon Meeting

Guest Speaker:
Mr. Yoshiyuki Kasai
Chairman and Representative Director of Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central)

Theme:
"Challenges Japan faces in the 21st century""

Recap:
At our luncheon meeting on Wednesday, 14 November we had a prominent guest speaker, Mr. Yoshiyuki Kasai, Chairman and Representative Director of Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). Mr. Kasai is also the Honorary Consul of Finland in Nagoya.

In his presentation, titled "Challenges Japan faces in the 21st century", Mr Kasai brought up the Senkaku issue, the future of nuclear power in Japan, the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) and Japan's fiscal problems, which in part are similar, although more difficult, than those the privatization of Japan National Railways (JNR) faced, which Mr. Kasai is very familiar with. According to Mr. Kasai, Japan should be involved in the TPP from the beginning to be able to formulate the rules, and not just follow rules set up by others. He was also of the opinion that Japan should first be a part of a TPP before starting negotiations with Korea and China on free trade agreements.

The luncheon, held for the first time at Grand Hyatt Tokyo attended by 33 participants was concluded by a lively Q&A session.
