Tomorrow Japan will elect a new Prime Minister and last Friday Nokia published their result for the first quarter of 2001 later today. Nokia's announcement raised the growth forecast for Finland's GDP by 0.25 percent units, will the Japanese announcement have the same positive effect...?

April Luncheon Meeting
Our April meeting will be held coming Friday, 27 April at 12:00 at Capitol Tokyu Hotel, Nikko Room. Our guest speaker will be Mr.Yuichiro Takagawa, COO from Sonera Japan K.K. and his theme is "New Keitai Life".
Sonera, which is one of the leading European telecom operators, established their office in Japan last autumn. To find our more about Sonera, click their logo.
If you would like to participate and have not yet registered, please do so, no later than Wed. 25 April, by clicking link to the right.
Note that we collect the participation fee of 7,000 yen at the door and provide you with a receipt.

May Luncheon Meeting
At our May meeting we will have a a Finnish Minister as Guest Speaker.
Mr. Kimmo Sasi, Minister of Foreign Trade is in Tokyo and will speak at our meeting on Wednesday 23 May at 12:00 at Capitol Tokyu Hotel, White Pearl Room.
Tenatively, the theme of his presentation will be
"The Visions of the Finnish Foreign Trade in Light of the Success of the 90's.".
Please mark this date (23 May) in your calendar already now. Our members will get the formal invitations right after Golden Week.
During his visit, there would also be a high-level IT Seminar on Tuesday 22 May, of which we will provide you further information later.

  • BCCJ Luncheon Meeting: "Mitigating Corporate Risk in Japan and Asia" "
    The British Chamber of Commerce in Japan organizes a luncheon at which the guest speaker is Stephen G. Vickers, Managing Director of PricewaterhouseCoopers Investigations Asia.
    He will speak on "Mitigating Corporate Risk in Japan and Asia".
    Date: Wednesday, May 16th, 2001
    Time: 12:00 - 14:00
    Venue: Capitol Tokyu Hotel, White Pearl Room
    Fee: 8,000 yen

The April issue of FCCJ NEWS is now in the mail and you should have it on your desk tomorrow. Among other interesting stories, it includes a "Farewell Interview" with Rauno Sirola. It also includes a report from our Annual General Assembly.
In each issue we feature a member company, this time Iwatani-Primus, which among many other things imports Suunto wrist-top computers.

News from Finland
Nokia's growth outlook raises GDP forecast
Nokia's first quarter result published on Friday improved forecasts for the economic outlook in Finland, especially for next year.
The forecast institutes had expected a downturn in the electronic industry exports next year, but Nokia believes that the speed will pick up. If Nokia's forecast of a 30 % growth realises, the Finnish GDP will grow 0.25 percent units more than expected.
