  ISSUE 27

22 November, 2001

Having lived in Japan for quite a while now (13 years, 5 months and 22 days to be exact), I have noticed one positive development relating to this time of the year. Guess what?

The Christmas decoration does not start early November, as it used during the bubble! We Finns believe that the Christmas season begins early December with what we call "pikkujoulu" (small Christmas). So, thank you department stores, and others, for showing consideration...;-)

Christmas Luncheon Meeting
Our December meeting will be held as a Christmas Luncheon at the
Embassy of Finland in on Friday, 14 December, 2001 at 12.00

On this occasion we will get a presentation of the functions in the Embassy compound and a presentation of new staff.
Please note that we will collect the luncheon fee of 7,000 yen and provide you with receipt. Note also that we have to invoice the lunch fee for cancellations later than 13 December and "no-shows".
We will mail out invitations early next week, but if you plan to attend and would like to register already now, please click link to the right.

Report from FCCJ Golf Competition
The images from the golf competition have now been found...
As reported in my last bulletin, the winner of this year's competition was Mitsuo Okabe from Nippon Felt Shoji, with a net score or 75. Second was Pekka Rauhala of Sonera Japan, he had also the best gross score of 97, which proves that not only the weather, but also the course was very tough. Martti Varesmaa of Nippon Finnpap was third.

The corporate tax regime in Japan is undergoing a period of fundamental change. Tax facilitated corporate reorganisations were introduced in FY2001, and a consolidated tax system is being planned for FY2002. How will these changes affect your business? News from Finland
PM Paavo Lipponen: Finland still competitive
According to Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen, the Finnish economy still compares well in a European comparison, even though the EU Commission estimated that the growth of the Finnish economy would be the lowest in the EU area this year.
Lipponen remided that. according to surveys, the Finnish growth potential is still good, even among the best in the world. Also the public economy is among the strongest in Europe.
