News from Finland

High labour costs hurt Finland's ability to compete

The Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) said Monday that the news that Finnish mobile phone component maker Perlos was ending manufacturing in the country with the loss of some 1,200 jobs had come as no surprise.

Penna Urrila, the EK's chief economist, said Finland was not in the best way competitive in industries labour costs were key.

"These are not that extraordinary news, for the world around us is changing. But at the same time we should bear in mind that employment in Finland has been rising quite well and will, according to forecasts, continue to do so. Structural change will of course continue," Mr Urrila said.

Grin of the week

Trust the word from a lady...

A man was driving up a steep and narrow mountain road. A woman was driving down the same road. As they passed each other, the woman leaned out the window and yelled, "Pig!"

The man immediately leaned out his window and replied, "Bitch!"

They continue on their way and as the man rounded the next corner, he crashes into a pig in the middle of the road.

Have a good rest of the week and,

Best regards

Clas G. Bystedt
