Mercedes-Benz Japan Cup 2014

The 12th North America - Europe Golf Challenge in Japan, the Mercedes-Benz Japan Cup 2014, will be played on Friday, 10 October, at the same venue as in previous years, the Atsugi Kokusai Country Club in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The organizing task-force is working hard to make this event as successful as previous years' events. While are playing at the same Club, this year we have a change and will play half of the East Course (9 holes-same as before) and half of the West Course (the second 9-holes), as the East Course's back 9 are under re-construction.

The participation fees are a 3,000 yen non-refundable registration fee and a 21,700 yen fee (paid to the club) for the play, caddie, lunch and party and a lot of great prizes, for a total of 24,700 yen. Note that bus transportation is free for the 40 first to sign-up for it.

Production of EBC's Year 2014 White Paper
- Request for Sponsorship & Advance Orders

This year, the EBC will again produce the EBC White Paper, its hallmark annual report on the business and investment environment, in English and Japanese, for release in mid November. This will be the 14th in the series. With the EU-Japan FTA negotiations underway, the White Paper will serve as a valuable reference for both our Japanese and European interlocutors.

However, the White Paper production depends on kind financial contributions from our members and supporters to help cover the costs of production, translation, and distribution.

We are requesting EBC members and supporters to contribute as Pinnacle Sponsors, Gold-Star Sponsors, Blue-Star Sponsors, Special Sponsors or Sponsors in return for visible acknowledgment in both the English and Japanese versions as indicated below. Pinnacle, Gold-Star and Blue-Star sponsor logos will be placed on the EBC homepage and all sponsor logos will be placed on a dedicated page in our website for 12 months from publication.

The EBC will also take advance orders for the white papers at 5,000 yen for one set (1 English and 1 Japanese version per set) as another form of sponsorship to assist with cost-recovery. Companies placing advance orders will be listed in the white paper as Supporters.

Please click link at right for more information and to sign-up as sponsor or make advance orders.
News from Finland

Katainen takes vice-president role in Juncker's new EU Commission

Finland's former Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen is set to take on a new role at the EU Commission as a vice-president in charge of jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness. He is part of a group of centre-right politicians brought in by new Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who says he wants to 'shake things up a bit'.

Finland's former Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen has finally been confirmed as a vice-president of the new EU Commission. His brief includes employment, growth, investment and competitiveness.

Katainen's role will entail supervising the Frenchman Pierre Moscovici, who is the new Commissioner for Economic Affairs in charge of keeping watch on member states' budgets.

"I have decided to make some changes and to shake some things up a bit," Juncker told a news conference.

Joining Katainen in the supervisory role will be the former Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, another politician who like Katainen and Juncker hails from the centre-right European People's Party.

Grin of the Week

It wasn't me....

There's a senior citizen driving on the highway. His wife calls him on his cell phone and in a worried voice says, "Herman, be careful! I just heard on the radio that there was a madman driving the wrong way on Route 280!"

Herman says, "I know, but there isn't just one, there are hundreds!"
Best regards

Clas G. Bystedt
