  ISSUE 15/2008 8 August, 2008

Dear !*TITLE*! !*LASTNAME*!,

We are back in business after a cool (in double sense..) 10 day stay in Finland and hot and humid (just literally...) three weeks in Japan.

We are off to a busy autumn season which starts with a Club Evening on 26 August and runs through mid-December with an average of two events per month (more about the club evening and event schedule below).

Today, 08.08.08, marks of course the start of the Beijing Olympic Games, which will also keep some of us busy in front of the TV. Let's hope for good games and some success for the Finnish and Japanese teams!

REMINDER - EBC White Paper 2008

This year, The European Business Council (EBC) will again produce English and Japanese white papers for release in early November. This will be the 9th in the series and thanks to the seven previous editions, the EBC is regarded both in Japan and Europe as the European industry authority on the Japanese business and investment environment.

However, as usual, this hallmark report cannot be produced without financial support to cover the costs of production, translation, printing and distribution. So once again, EBC is asking members to sponsor the publication as "Blue-Star Sponsors," "Special Sponsors" or "Sponsors" in return for visible acknowledgment in the 2 volumes and we will also place all sponsor logos on our website homepage for 12 months. Similar to last year, the EBC will also take advance orders for the white papers at 5,000 yen for one set (1 English and 1 Japanese version per set) to assist with cost-recovery. Companies placing advance orders will be listed in the white paper as "Supporters."

    White Paper Sponsorship
  • Blue-Star Sponsorship 150,000 yen (or more if you wish) (Company name on a 2-name page)
  • Special Sponsorship: 100,000 yen (Company name on a 10-name page)
  • Sponsorship: 50,000 yen (Company name on a 20-name page)

Purchase Price of White Papers (including postage):
  • 5,000 yen per set: 1 English copy and 1 Japanese copy

A sponsorship reply form and an order reply form are attached below right. If you would like to support the white paper as either a sponsor and/or would like to order copies please print out the forms and return them to the EBC secretariat by fax (3263-6223) or by e-mail (ebc@gol.com)

Expectations clearly weaker than before - EK Survey

In EK's (Confederation of Finnish Industries) July survey, Finnish companies say that their current business situation is still slightly better than normal, but their expectations for the near future are clearly weaker than before. The overall business cycle is forecast to weaken significantly in the latter part of the year and around the turn of the year.

The outlook has cooled gradually throughout the first half of 2008, although production has continued to grow moderately in most sectors. Order backlogs have fallen back to the usual level, and capacity utilization has weakened somewhat. Employment growth also fell short of previous figures.

Prices have increased overall, but in many sectors profitability has not improved because of rapid cost increases. Despite the cooling cycle, a shortage of skilled labor is still a substantial problem.

    Take the medicin

A woman had some problems, so she went to her doctor of twenty years. They had the following conversation:

Dr.: Take the red pill after breakfast with one glass of water.
    Woman: OK.

Dr: Take the blue pill after lunch with two glasses of water.
    Woman: OK.

Dr.: Take the yellow pill after dinner with three glasses of water.
After giving these instructions to the woman, she asks, "Can you tell me what's wrong with me doctor?

Dr.: Yeah. You do not drink enough water.

  • I wish you a nice weekend and for those in Japan - a good O'bon holiday!

    Best regards
