  ISSUE 8/2005

6 April, 2005

The grand opening of the Sendai-Finland Wellbeing Center was held last week in the attendance of Minister Mauri Pekkarinen. The impressive facilities definitely have a Finnish flavor to them and the project is a very good example of cooperation between Finnish and Japanese private sectors and government institutions.

During an interval in the opening ceremony proceedings Minster Pekkarinen (at right) and Ambassador Eero Salovaara tested the equipment in the center, showing great skills on riding a tricycle. Nice political and diplomatic balance, right!

News from Finland

Nokia to gain EUR 90 mln from sale of professional radio unit to EADS

Finnish telecommunications group Nokia and the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) announced in their respective statements Tuesday that they were in advanced negotiations whereby EADS would buy the Espoo-based company's professional mobile radio (PMR) business. Nokia estimates that it will gain around 90 million euros from the sale, but the price had not yet been fixed.

"We see a global market potential in this field, of over € 10 billion within the next five years," said Stefan Zoller, chief executive of EADS' defence and communications systems arm.

The 325 Nokia employees in the PMR arm, including those working on the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) digital infrastructure, would be transferred to EADS, said a Nokia statement.

The companies added in the statements they believed the sale would be completed before year's end, pending official approval.

Grin of the week

Swedish Car Crash

A small build-up to our golf match against the Swedes next week....

A Finn and a Swede are driving head on, at night, on a twisty, dark road. Both are driving too fast for the conditions and collide on a sharp bend in the road. To the amazement of both, they are unscathed, though their cars are both destroyed.

In celebration of their luck, the Finn goes to the boot and fetches a big bottle of Finlandia Vodka. He hands the bottle to the Swede, who exclaims,'' may the Swedes and the Finns live together forever, in peace, and harmony.'' The Swede then tips the bottle and gulps half of the bottle down.

Still flabbergasted over the whole thing, he hands the bottle to the Finn, who replies: '' no thanks, I'll just wait until the police get here."

Have a nice rest of the week and hope you could enjoy some hanami!

Best regards
